Merging Communities – Emerging Pride

David Smith ES David E. Smith Elementary School represents the successful merger of two existing schools into a new, two-story, 101,500-square-foot facility housing Pre-K through 5th grade. The campus caters to the diverse community it serves through guiding principles of inclusivity, collaboration, sense of choice, and access to nature. The building is organized around a central entry flanked by a secured academic wing and a semi-public community wing with the learning commons, gym, and cafeteria as a welcoming hub for the campus. The building design and organization emphasizes clear sightlines and visual openness, ensuring a secure yet open atmosphere for students and staff.

Learning Objectives:
  • Creating an experiential journey through interior graphic design.
  • Planning for visual safety and security while maintaining a dynamic environment.
  • Bringing the outside in through borrowed light, biophilic influence, and views to nature.
  • Supporting a community during campus mergers.
